Can Livestock Save the World?

Go Vegan to Save the Planet!

Can livestock save the world?

When I didn’t eat meat I had a scientific argument for my decision.  I argued that there would be no starvation in the world if we only stopped eating livestock and ate plants instead.  So you can imagine the mental hoops I lept through when I was so much healthier eating meat.

Organic, free range, grass fed are terms used by ethically minded ex-vegans to justify eating meat.  A lot of land around the world isn’t suitable for crop growing.  Animals can be grazed though providing food to people who would otherwise starve.  However, there is another argument for eating meat and here it is in the form of one of the best TED talks I’ve ever watched.

I urge you to watch this – it is outstanding.  If you have seen it before, it is worth watching again!

Savory argues that the use of closely packed animals will reverse desertification and ultimately climate change.  This may or may not be true.  His pictures are persuasive.  His thinking seems tightly reasoned.

I realise that this is playing into my current cognitive bias but it is worth considering as a possible solution.
